Egyptian Drug Authority discusses with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency ways to enhance regulatory cooperation
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), held a high-level meeting with a delegation from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), headed by Professor Laurence Tallon, Chief Executive Officer of the agency, and Professor Anthony Harnden, Chair of the Agency. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2025 International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) Summit, held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The discussions focused on exchanging expertise in areas related to regulatory digital transformation, development of drug registration and evaluation systems, and exploring opportunities for cooperation in promoting regulatory innovation to ensure the timely availability of safe and effective medicines, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and oversight.
The meeting also addressed the implementation of joint capacity-building programs and technical skills development for professionals in the regulatory sector, through expert exchanges and training courses in digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and advanced pharmacovigilance systems.
The session included a review of the significant achievements of the Egyptian Drug Authority in its comprehensive digital transformation journey, in alignment with Egypt’s national direction toward modernizing digital government services and achieving good governance in vital sectors.
The British delegation expressed its appreciation for the progress made by the Egyptian authority, affirming its readiness to support the EDA with its extensive experience in regulatory innovation and integrated pharmaceutical oversight.
Participants from the UK side included Ms. Timia Patterson, Head of the CEO’s Office, and Ms. Rachel Arundale, Interim Director of Partnerships.
From the Egyptian side, attendees included Dr. Osama Hatem, Assistant to the EDA Chairman for Policy and International Cooperation Affairs and Supervisor of the Central Administration for Pharmaceutical Policies and Market Support, and Dr. Sondos Mohamed, Supervisor of the Organizations Portfolio at the General Administration of Public Relations and International Cooperation.
This meeting comes within the framework of the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to strengthening its international presence and expanding partnerships with leading global reference regulatory bodies, particularly with the United Kingdom, which is considered one of the world’s foremost countries in pharmaceutical innovation and regulation.
