EDA Chairman Participates in Forum on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Pharmaceutical Sector in South Africa
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), participated in the Forum on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Pharmaceutical Sector, organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, with high-level participation from leaders of pharmaceutical regulatory authorities, technology experts, and representatives of international institutions concerned with health systems development.
The forum was convened as part of international efforts to advance the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies in support of health systems, develop pharmaceutical regulatory operations, enhance decision-making efficiency, and accelerate access to safe and effective medicines, while ensuring the quality of healthcare services.
During his participation, Dr. El-Ghamrawy emphasized that digital transformation and artificial intelligence represent strategic priorities within the Egyptian Drug Authority’s institutional development agenda. He noted that the Authority is actively integrating advanced technologies across registration, inspection, and data analysis functions, contributing to enhanced transparency, improved operational efficiency, and the provision of accurate, reliable data to decision-makers—thereby reinforcing the confidence of citizens and international partners in the pharmaceutical regulatory system.
He further highlighted the importance of digital solutions and AI tools in strengthening pharmaceutical regulatory work, stressing that the Authority aims to enhance institutional efficiency, ensure national ownership of technological tools, build sustainable institutional capacities, and align innovation with robust regulatory frameworks.
Dr. El-Ghamrawy also underscored the importance of international cooperation and knowledge exchange with regional and global partners, commending the efforts of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in supporting initiatives that harness advanced technologies to serve public health, particularly in priority countries.
