Egyptian Drug Authority explores investment opportunities in Egypt with UAE-based WEKAYA Company to enhance the medical and pharmaceutical waste management system
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), held a meeting with Mr. Ali Al Naqbi, Chairman of the Board of WEKAYA LLC (UAE), as part of the Authority’s efforts to support and develop the national system for managing medical and pharmaceutical waste, and to promote environmental sustainability practices within the healthcare sector.
The meeting reviewed WEKAYA’s activities in the field of medical and hazardous waste treatment and management using environmentally friendly technologies, where the company presented its latest international practices and standards in medical and pharmaceutical waste management.
Both sides discussed mechanisms for joint cooperation in the safe management of medical and pharmaceutical waste, as well as opportunities for transferring international expertise and advanced technologies to the Egyptian market, to ensure the implementation of the highest environmental and health safety standards in line with the latest global systems.
During the meeting, the EDA Chairman emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with companies specializing in integrated environmental solutions, noting that the development of safe pharmaceutical waste disposal mechanisms is a key pillar of the pharmaceutical governance framework adopted by the Egyptian Drug Authority. This, he added, contributes to enhancing the efficiency of the pharmaceutical system and achieving sustainable development.
For their part, representatives of WEKAYA expressed their readiness for technical cooperation with the EDA in the fields of training, technology transfer, and implementation of advanced waste treatment systems in Egyptian pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. They also affirmed their aspiration for a strategic partnership that supports environmental protection and safeguards public health.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Mohab Ahmed, Head of the Central Administration for Pharmaceutical Establishment Licensing at the EDA.
This meeting comes within a series of engagements held by the Egyptian Drug Authority with regional and international companies to develop the infrastructure of the pharmaceutical sector, ensuring a balance between public health requirements and environmental protection. It also aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for Sustainable Development, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to developing the pharmaceutical industry as a vital sector that supports the national economy and ensures the availability of safe and effective medicines for Egyptian citizens.
