The Drug Authority: We are working to develop operational mechanisms that ensure pharmaceutical safety
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), held an extensive meeting with a number of pharmacy representatives specialized in dispensing narcotic and psychotropic drugs. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss mechanisms for handling this category of preparations and address the challenges associated with their circulation and dispensing. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Tamer El-Hossieny, Vice Chairman of the Authority.
The discussions focused on developing and enhancing the controls and procedures governing the dispensing of narcotic drugs, in a way that improves accuracy and effectiveness in their application, while also ensuring facilitation for patients so they can obtain their therapeutic needs without delay. The aim is to provide pharmacists with clear and efficient mechanisms that support them in performing their professional duties.
During the meeting, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy emphasized that the gathering represents an important step toward strengthening cooperation and integration between the Authority and pharmacists. He noted that the ultimate goal is to achieve a delicate balance between ensuring patients’ right to access treatment and protecting society from the risks of misuse or illicit circulation.
He also stressed that pharmacies are key partners in safeguarding public health and ensuring pharmaceutical safety. He affirmed that the Authority will continue holding participatory meetings with pharmacists to evaluate and enhance current practices, ensuring the highest levels of discipline and transparency.
In addition, the meeting addressed the digital transformation project for tracking and dispensing narcotic drugs. It was confirmed that work is underway to develop a more efficient electronic system that allows accurate tracking of dispensing operations, facilitates documentation of pharmacies’ daily transactions, and provides decision-makers with real-time data that strengthens oversight and limits any inappropriate practices.
Pharmacy representatives expressed their appreciation for the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to establishing direct communication channels with them, noting that the meeting enabled a professional and transparent presentation of real-world challenges. Attendees praised the participatory approach adopted by the Authority in developing controls, which reinforces the professional role of pharmacists and ensures a balance between patients’ needs and pharmaceutical safety requirements.
This meeting comes as part of the Egyptian Drug Authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen direct communication with pharmacists, recognizing them as essential partners in ensuring the rational use of medicines. It also reflects the Authority’s commitment to benefiting from their field expertise in developing oversight procedures, facilitating processes for patients, protecting societal safety, and preventing errors or misuse.
