Egyptian Drug Authority Chairman discusses plans to localize the pharmaceutical industry and enhance pharmaceutical investment with Viatris

Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), held an extensive meeting with a delegation from global pharmaceutical company Viatris, led by Dr. Mohamed Sweilem, Regional President for Egypt and North Africa. The meeting comes within the framework of the ongoing cooperation between the Authority and its strategic partners from leading international companies, and in support of the state’s strategy to enhance investment in the pharmaceutical industry sector.
The meeting discussed several key topics, including Viatris’ plans to localize pharmaceutical industry in Egypt and boost investments related to local manufacturing sector. Discussions also addressed ensuring and improving medicine availability for citizens, sustaining manufacturing operations, and exploring prospects for future strategic cooperation between the EDA and Viatris to support pharmaceutical security and achieve sustainable development.
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy emphasized that this meeting reflects the strength of the EDA’s international partnerships with leading global companies in the pharmaceutical sector. He noted that it comes as part of the Authority’s efforts to support the state’s strategies aimed at increasing investment, localizing drug manufacturing, and achieving self-sufficiency. He stressed that the EDA is committed to providing an attractive investment environment based on transparency and cooperation, ensuring the availability of safe and effective medicines for Egyptian citizens at affordable prices, while maintaining the sustainability of the local production system.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Sweilem expressed his deep appreciation for the EDA’s efforts in supporting the pharmaceutical sector and opening new avenues for investment. He affirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its activities in Egypt through clear plans for localization, technology transfer, and developing local manufacturing capabilities, which contributes to strengthening pharmaceutical security and supporting economic development in the country.
The Viatris delegation praised the pivotal role played by the EDA in developing the pharmaceutical sector, affirming that the Authority serves as a leading model in supporting international partnerships and creating an attractive investment environment. This, they noted, contributes to expanding cooperation with global companies and reinforces Egypt’s position as a regional hub for the pharmaceutical industry and export.
The meeting was attended from the EDA side by Dr. Osama Hatem, the Associate to the EDA Chairman for Policy and International Cooperation and Supervisor of the Central Administration of Pharmaceutical Policies and Market Access, Dr. Hossam Abdullah , the Associate to EDA Chairman for Market Support and Continuity and Director of the General Administration for Market Support and Continuity.
From Viatris, attendees included Dr. Mona Mounir, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Market Support for Egypt, North Africa, Ukraine, and CIS countries, Dr. Khaled El-Tahawy, Viatris Plant Manager; Mr. Khaled El-Shafie, the company’s Chief Financial Officer; and Dr. Mohamed Sami, the company’s Commercial Director.
The Egyptian Drug Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with local and international partners to strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional center for pharmaceutical industry and export in line with global standards, while supporting pharmaceutical security and contributing to sustainable economic development.
