Dr. Ali Al-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the EDA, welcomed H.E. President Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, and his accompanying delegation during an official visit to Gypto Pharma, one of the largest pharmaceutical industrial landmarks in Egypt and Africa. The visit was attended by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, and comes within the framework of strengthening bilateral cooperation in pharmaceutical and regulatory fields, while supporting efforts toward healthcare integration and pharmaceutical security across the African continent.
At the outset of the meeting, Dr. Al-Ghamrawy welcomed the Eritrean President and his accompanying delegation, emphasizing the depth of the historical and fraternal relations between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Eritrea. He also highlighted the political leadership's commitment in both countries to expanding avenues of cooperation in ways that serve the strategic interests of their brotherly peoples.
He stated that the visit reflects the growing confidence in Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector and the significant progress it has achieved at both the regulatory and industrial levels. He also noted that the EDA places its technical and regulatory expertise at the service of fellow African nations, supporting efforts to build robust pharmaceutical systems that ensure pharmaceutical security for the continent's populations.
He further reviewed the advanced capabilities of Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector and the regulatory milestones of the EDA, which became the first—and currently the only—African regulatory authority to attain the WHO’s Maturity Level 3 (ML3) for the regulation of locally manufactured products and vaccines. This achievement reflects the efficiency of Egypt’s regulatory system and its distinguished regional and international standing.
The visit included a tour of Gypto Pharma’s facilities, during which President Isaias Afwerki and his delegation viewed the latest production lines, advanced manufacturing technologies, and the factory’s production and technological capabilities. These capabilities support efforts to localize pharmaceutical manufacturing and enhance pharmaceutical security in Egypt and across Africa, while demonstrating the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry’s ability to meet the demands of regional and African markets.
For his part, H.E. President Isaias Afwerki praised the significant progress Egypt has achieved in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and commended the EDA's efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical oversight and enhance the quality of pharmaceutical products. He emphasized the importance of benefiting from Egypt’s pioneering experience and expanding areas of cooperation to support healthcare development in both countries.
Both sides underscored the importance of building upon the distinguished relations between Egypt and Eritrea and enhancing cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer, and the development of technical and regulatory capacities, thereby contributing to health development and sustainable pharmaceutical security for the peoples of the African continent.
This visit aligns with the framework of the EDA’s strategy to expand cooperation with other African countries, promote continental integration in the fields of pharmaceuticals and healthcare, and reinforce Egypt’s position as a leading regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and regulation in Africa.
The EDA reaffirms its full readiness to provide technical support, exchange expertise, and build capacities with its counterparts in the State of Eritrea, contributing to the advancement of the pharmaceutical sector and enhancing opportunities for joint cooperation and investment, in line with Egypt’s vision of supporting African integration and achieving sustainable health development for the peoples of the continent.
